Hochtief has secured a significant contract for a building-construction public-private partnership (PPP) project in Berlin, Germany. The client is Institute for Federal Real Estate (BImA), a Federal government agency providing other institutions with real estate services.
The PPP Contract includes redeveloping and maintaining a public administration office and training complex for 30 years. Apart from the price, the Client (BImA) also considered sustainability aspects during the assessment of tenders, such as resource-saving initiatives in both the construction and O&M phases.
The project will create around 2,400 jobs in the Treptow-Köpenick district of Berlin. Spanning approximately 87,000 square meters in total, the development will include the core refurbishment of four existing properties connected with new buildings and extensions.
In addition to offices, the complex will feature training and conference areas, technical operations rooms, and a canteen. To promote environmentally friendly practices, charging stations for electric vehicles and e-bikes will be integrated into the site, and photovoltaic systems will be installed on all roofs to generate electricity.
Upon completion, HOCHTIEF will maintain the property for 25 years, taking charge of technical and commercial building management and maintenance and cleaning services.
Juan Santamaria, Hochtief CEO, highlighted the importance of sustainable initiatives included in the project:
“Our strategy is to help our clients to make their buildings more sustainable. Because the contract covers the refurbishment and operation of the properties, we can optimize the buildings over their entire life cycle. As a result, we can reduce the carbon footprint as well as the operating costs of tenants.”
