Following the acquisition of 100% of the shares of Oriana Solar LLC, Sabanci Renewables has selected Bechtel as the contractor to design and construct its new 232 MWdc solar project in Victoria County, Texas.
The construction phase is expected to kick off in early 2024, and the plan is reaching practical completion in mid-2025. It is worth noting that Oriana Solar LLC also possesses a license to construct and operate a 60 MW energy storage facility in Texas.
This further demonstrates Sabanci Renewables’ strategy in expanding its renewable energy projects in the United States, particularly in the field of solar power and energy storage.
Oriana Solar Facility - Project Details
The Oriana Solar facility in Texas will substantially contribute to clean energy generation in Texas. It is projected to produce sufficient clean energy to power more than 34,000 homes, showcasing its significant impact on reducing carbon emissions and advancing sustainable energy sources.
An interesting feature of this solar project is the utilization of highly efficient bifacial solar panel technology. These panels are designed to capture sunlight on both their front and back sides, optimizing energy absorption and substantially increasing solar farm’s efficiency.
The renewable energy generated at the Oriana Solar facility will be integrated into the grid operated by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), which plays a crucial role in managing and distributing electricity in the state.

Oriana Solar Facility - Contract details between Bechtel and Sabanci
According to Bechtel’s press release, the company’s responsibilities encompass the entire project lifecycle, from initial design and procurement to construction, commissioning, and overall project management, in what appears to be an EPC Turnkey Contract.
In “turnkey” agreements, the Contractor (e.g. Becthel) hands over the asset to the owner (e.g. Sanbaci), fully operational and ready for power generation. Overall, EPC Contractors are typically responsible for (refer to figure below):
- Engineering: The Contractor bears the responsibility for the development of the project’s detailed planning and design based on functionality requirements, in this case, a 232MWdc solar farm facility.
- Procurement: The Contractor also procures all required materials, labour, and subcontractors for project delivery.
- Construction: The Contractor will lead the construction delivery, be in charge of construction management and ensure timely project completion.

Construction of the Oriana Solar project is scheduled to commence in the early part of the next year and is expected to reach completion by mid-2025.
Becthel and Sabanci – Other Projects under development in the US
The collaboration between Sabanci and Bechtel in the field of renewable energy is rapidly expanding.
After Sabanci established Sabanci Renewables in June 2022, the journey has been marked by significant acquisitions and projects in the renewable energy sector.
In October 2022, Sabanci acquired the 272 MW Cutlass Solar 2 project, which is already well on its way to completion under Bechtel’s management (see photo below).
Scott Austin, the General Manager of Bechtel’s Renewables & Clean Power business, emphasized the company’s commitment to the local community and suppliers, reinforcing their dedication to bringing clean renewable energy to the region while contributing to the local economy.
Sabanci – Leadership comments on Oriana Solar Facility Project
Ismail Bilgin, CEO of Sabanci Renewables, expressed their enthusiasm for this latest project and reaffirmed their dedication to renewable energy. As a company, Sabanci is looking beyond the present, working to create a sustainable future that benefits future generations and the broader community.
Sabanci Renewables is actively working towards a substantial goal, aiming to develop and operate a 1 GW renewable portfolio by 2025. They focus on utility-scale solar, onshore wind, and battery projects in key markets, including ERCOT, MISO, and PJM, showcasing their dedication to expanding clean energy solutions across the United States.
