Aecon Group Inc. has successfully secured a significant $290 million design-build contract to deliver an Elevated Guideway as part of the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension (ECWE) project in Toronto, Ontario.
According to Metrolinx, the strategic expansion of the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension is set to substantially enhance rapid transit access in Etobicoke and Mississauga, streamlining daily commutes for residents and commuters.
The extension of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT spans 9.2 kilometres from the upcoming Mount Dennis LRT station to Renforth Drive. Most of the project will be underground, except for a final segment near Renforth Station and a critical 1.5-kilometre Elevated Guideway section (this package).
Eglinton Crosstown West Extension (ECWE) - Elevated Guideway – Scope of Works
Aecon will be responsible for designing and constructing the pivotal 1.5-kilometre elevated guideway strategically positioned along the north side of Eglinton Avenue West.
Typically, under a design-construct contract, the contractor retains the responsibility (and assumes the risks) for both the design development and construction works, which implies a significant level of risk transfer from Metrolinx to Aecon.

The project’s trajectory spans from just east of Jane Street to just west of Scarlett Road, and the elevated Guideway holds significant importance within the broader 9.2-kilometer extension plan of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT. Construction activities are scheduled to be initiated in early 2024, project completion is expected in 2028.
