The Nordic infrastructure investor Infranode has finalized the acquisition of a 49% stake in two biogas assets from the Danish Biogas developer and operator Renegas A/S (Renegas).
This investment signifies Infranode’s first capital deployment into biogas investments and initiates a partnership to establish a biogas platform, which aims to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels.
Infranode's investment in Renegas - Details
About Renegas
Renegas is a newly established platform focused on developing, acquiring, and operating biogas projects. It already boasts significant expertise in gas sales, green certificate distribution, and CO2 advisory services. This expertise positions them to establish subsidy-free biogas facilities in the future, built upon green contracts with end customers.
Infranode's investment in Renegas - The two biogas plants
With Infranode’s investment, there are plans to double the facilities’ capacity by the end of 2026. Furthermore, there’s potential for additional investments alongside Renegas, as they have a pipeline established for additional opportunities and expansions.
Utilizing innovative technologies, these plants are poised to significantly contribute to advancing the development of next-generation green fuels for aviation and shipping.
Thorsø Plant
The Thorsø Biogas Plant is a facility in Denmark that focuses on producing biogas through the anaerobic digestion of organic materials like agricultural waste, manure, and other organic substances. This process involves breaking down these materials without oxygen to generate biogas, which primarily consists of methane.
The biogas produced can be used as a renewable energy source for heat, electricity generation, and vehicle fuel. Additionally, the residual material from the digestion process can be used as a nutrient-rich fertilizer.
The Thorsø Biogas Plant contributes to Denmark’s efforts in promoting renewable energy production and sustainable waste management practices.
Foersom Plant
Foersom Bioenergy is a recently completed biogas facility in Denmark that endeavours to champion the green transition through several key initiatives:
- Biogas Production: The plant utilizes locally sourced manure, slurry, and biomass to generate biogas, thereby reducing reliance on natural gas within the grid.
- Local Farmer Support: By involving farmers in the provision and receipt of raw materials, the facility fosters a circular system that benefits local agricultural practices.
- Forward-Thinking Design: With tall tanks and extended residence time, the plant is poised to incorporate hydrogen methanation technology in the future, elevating its sustainability.
- Independent Funding: Foersom Bioenergy stands out for being privately funded, signalling its commercial viability without state aid, a departure from previous models.
Some noteworthy details about the facility:
- Construction was completed in 2022, and it commenced operations officially in August 2023.
- It features two 8,000 m3 reactors and an 8,000 m3 degassing reactor equipped with integrated gas storage.
