Meta has awarded Turner Construction Company the contract to build a 700,000-square-foot hyperscale data centre campus in Jeffersonville, Indiana. The data centre will feature significant sustainability initiatives and will be 100% powered by renewable energy sources.

The Jeffersonville Data Center is anticipated to represent a total investment of more than $800 million and is expected to support approximately 100 jobs once it starts operation.

Jeffersonville Data Center - Project Details

The Jeffersonville Data Center is set to become an integral part of Meta’s global infrastructure, facilitating the realization of their technologies and services.

Spanning nearly 700,000 square feet, the  campus will include multiple data centre buildings designed with efficiency, flexibility, and sustainability in mind. Turner Construction Company confirmed that it will employ cutting-edge prefabricated modular assemblies and equipment during construction.

Prefabricated modular assemblies streamline the construction of data centres by offering rapid deployment, cost efficiency, and scalability. The controlled manufacturing process ensures high quality, and integrating energy-efficient technologies contributes to sustainability. The modular flexibility also allows for customization, and off-site construction minimizes on-site disruptions and environmental impact.

Jeffersonville Data Center - Sustainability Aspects

Once operational, the Jeffersonville Data Center will be powered by 100% renewable energy, supported by investments in new renewable energy projects. Like Meta’s other data centres, it is anticipated to achieve LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, showcasing a commitment to environmentally friendly building practices.

According to Meta, the new asset will be one of the most sustainable data centres globally, with a strong focus on onsite water efficiency. The Jeffersonville Data Center will:

  • Utilize cooling technology that surpasses the industry standard in water efficiency.
  • Feature landscaping with native and drought-resistant vegetation.
  • Implement rainwater capture and infiltration on site.
  • Integrate water-saving fixtures and technologies within the data centre facilities.

Jeffersonville Data Center - Turner Construction Company

Dan Harmon, Vice President and General Manager of Turner Construction Company, expressed excitement about commencing another data centre project for Meta. According to Turner, the construction activities will start in January 2024.

During the construction peak, over 1,250 workers are expected on-site daily. Collaborating with the community and local trade partners, the goal is to construct a sustainable data centre connecting people globally.
