Amtrak has chosen AECOM to provide project and contract management services for the development of the Susquehanna River Rail Bridge Project (SRB), a two-track bridge in Maryland.
The project aims to enhance rail connectivity and safety along the U.S. Northeast Corridor by replacing the 117-year-old two-track bridge in Maryland with two new bridges, ultimately increasing capacity and improving reliability for freight and passenger trains.
Susquehanna River Rail Bridge Project – About it
The Susquehanna River Rail Bridge is a two-track bridge located in the City of Havre de Grace in Harford County, MD, and the Town of Perryville in Cecil County, MD.
Constructed in 1906 and owned by Amtrak, it serves Amtrak, the Maryland Area Regional Commuter (MARC) rail, and Norfolk Southern Railway for passenger and freight transportation across the Susquehanna River.
Being the longest moveable bridge on the NEC (Northeast Corridor), it plays a crucial role and is set to be replaced with new structures to ensure the continuity of rail services across the Susquehanna River. The project aims to:
- Enhance capacity,
- Decrease trips time, and
- Increase safety for commuter, freight, and intercity passenger rail services, aligning with State and Amtrak plans.
- Improve the navigation channel for marine users.
Susquehanna River Rail Bridge Project – Status
In December 2023, Amtrak awarded three contracts for the Susquehanna River Rail Bridge Replacement Program, selecting Flatiron/Herzog Joint Ventures as the Construction Manager at Risk contractor, along with two additional contracts to AECOM and Fay Construction.
