Fluor announced that it has entered into a contract with RoPower Nuclear to proceed with the Phase 2 front-end engineering and design (FEED) work at the small modular reactor (SMR) facility in Doicesti, Romania. This project will employ NuScale Power’s SMR technology to produce carbon-free power, in line with Romania’s clean energy initiatives.
Fluor's FEED Contract (Phase 2) with RoPower Nuclear
In Phase 2 of the FEED work, Fluor will customize a six-reactor SMR power plant using NuScale technology, designed to generate up to 462 megawatts in compliance with European codes and standards. Fluor is a majority investor in NuScale, the developer of the only SMR technology approved by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
The contract was executed during the Partnership for Transatlantic Energy and Climate Cooperation summit in Bucharest, Romania, on Wednesday, July 24. The signing ceremony included representatives from Fluor and NuScale, as well as Romanian Minister of Energy Sebastian Burduja and U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm, highlighting the bilateral cooperation and the essential role of SMR technology in achieving carbon-free power and enhancing energy security.
What is a Small Modular Reactor (SMR)?
According to NuScNuScale‘s website, a small modular reactor (SMR) is a compact nuclear fission reactor (smaller than a traiditional reactor), factory-built and assembled on-site.
Its modular design allows for scalability and continuous refueling, reducing upfront costs and making it an affordable option for nuclear energy investments. With advanced safety features, SMRs are seen as a promising technology for future nuclear power generation.
