ACCIONA, in collaboration with Ferrovial, has successfully completed the construction of a 29.7-kilometer highway extending the Pan-American Highway through Chimbote, located in northern Peru.
This new roadway is expected to alleviate urban traffic congestion and reduce travel times by 65%, cutting the journey from two hours to approximately 40 minutes.
Pan-American Highway - 29.7km extension through Chimbote
The project, which required an investment of PEN600 million (€142 million), was completed in two years and nine months, finishing three months ahead of schedule. The scope of work included the construction of three roundabouts, eight underpasses, auxiliary roads, and the replacement of an extensive network of irrigation systems.
According to Acciona, with the completion of this highway, travel times within Chimbote have decreased by 30 to 45 minutes, and road safety has improved considerably. Additionally, the new route helps to enhance air quality in the city center by diverting both light and heavy vehicles away from urban areas, enabling smoother traffic flow in the north-south corridor.

The JV also highlighted project’s commitment to social responsibility. The project implemented several initiatives to support local communities, which included a training program for farmers to promote local employment, maintaining a continuous water supply for crop irrigation, and implementing a comprehensive dust control and mitigation plan to protect agricultural activities.
Acciona Footprint in Peruvian Market
The company maintains a strong presence in Peru’s infrastructure market since 1998, delivering large-scale projects across various sectors with multiple projects:
- In April 2024, ACCIONA, together with Ferrovial and Sacyr, secured the contract to design, construct, and operate the Lima Peripheral Ring Road. This 34.8-kilometer urban toll highway in the metropolitan region of Lima will be managed under a 30-year concession.
- In 2022, the company was awarded a concession/PPP contract for the design, financing, construction, operation, and maintenance of an electricity transmission network, benefitting approximately 1.3 million people between Reque and Nueva Carhuaquero and between Nueva Tumbes and Tumbes in northern Peru. Another concession followed in 2023 for two transmission lines serving 370,000 people between Ica and Poroma in southern Peru and between Cáclic and Jaén in the north.
- ACCIONA has also played a key role in other significant projects, including the construction of a pumping system for the copper ore processing plant at the Antamina project in Huari province and the new control tower at Jorge Chávez International Airport in Lima.
- In the water treatment sector, ACCIONA has delivered critical infrastructure such as the Pachacúctec Wastewater Treatment Plant, the Talara desalination plant, the La Chira wastewater treatment plant, and the Arequipa treatment plant. The company also manages water services in Lima through Sedapal and has completed major construction projects including the Daniel Alcides Carrión Hospital and the Pucallpa prison.
- In February 2022, ACCIONA Energía initiated its first renewable energy project in Peru with the development of the 131.1MW San Juan de Marcona wind farm in the Ica region.
