GE Vernova has entered into an agreement with RWE to supply 109 of its 2.8 MW–127m onshore wind turbines for two wind farm projects in Texas. The Honey Mesquite Wind Farm, located in Glasscock County, will be equipped with new turbines, while the Forest Creek Wind Farm near Big Spring will undergo a repowering process to enhance its efficiency and extend its operational lifespan.
These projects mark a significant investment in the expansion of wind energy capacity in the United States. The Forest Creek deal was confirmed in the second quarter of 2024, with the Honey Mesquite order finalized in the third quarter. Turbine deliveries for both projects are set to begin later this year.
The Wind Farms: Honey Mesquite and Forest Creek
Forest Creek Wind Farm Repowering
The Forest Creek Wind Farm, originally built near Big Spring, Texas, began generating electricity in 2006. Situated in the rolling hills of West Texas, it features 54 Siemens Mark II wind turbines, each standing 400 feet tall with a capacity of 2.3 megawatts (more details on the video below – courtesy of RWE).
Now, the wind farm is undergoing a major repowering effort to enhance its efficiency and output. The existing turbines will be replaced with GE Vernova’s latest technology, increasing power generation while reducing maintenance costs.
Repowering older wind farms is a cost-effective strategy to extend their lifespan and strengthen their role in the renewable energy mix. By upgrading to modern turbines, Forest Creek will continue to harness the region’s strong winds while improving performance and sustainability for years to come.
Honey Mesquite Wind Farm
The Honey Mesquite Wind Farm, located in Glasscock County, Texas, is a new development that will utilize GE Vernova’s advanced 2.8 MW–127m turbines. These high-efficiency turbines are designed to maximize energy output while maintaining a low environmental footprint.
Once operational, Honey Mesquite will contribute significantly to the state’s renewable energy supply, supporting the Texas power grid with sustainable electricity generation.

Leadership comments on the projects
Scott Stalica, Executive Director of North American Commercial Operations for GE Vernova’s Onshore Wind business, emphasized the significance of the partnership, stating: “We are pleased to have an opportunity to support a leader in the wind industry and appreciate RWE’s confidence in our business, our technology, and our people. These projects are another example of how wind power can support the country’s growing energy needs, while creating U.S. jobs and bolstering energy security.”
Kevin Kroll, Chief Operating Officer of RWE Clean Energy, highlighted the broader impact: “RWE’s investments in West Texas symbolize our steadfast commitment to producing homegrown energy and strengthening U.S. manufacturing and supply chains through our partnerships with great American companies like GE Vernova. Together, we are contributing to American energy dominance and fostering continued economic opportunity and job creation in rural communities across the country.”
Job Creation and Economic Benefits in the US
The development and repowering of these wind farms are expected to create substantial economic benefits. RWE estimates that hundreds of full-time jobs will be supported during peak construction, providing employment opportunities in Texas’s growing renewable energy sector.
Once operational, the two wind farms will generate enough electricity to power over 85,000 homes and businesses across the state. Additionally, the initiative supports several hundred long-term manufacturing jobs at GE Vernova’s Pensacola facility in Florida, which will supply critical turbine components for these projects.
