In a major development for the global decarbonization push, Technip Energies has secured a significant contract for the Blue Point Number One ATR Project, an ambitious low-carbon ammonia production facility planned for Donaldsonville, Louisiana.

The project is being led by a joint venture comprising CF Industries, JERA Co., Inc., and Mitsui & Co., Ltd., and is positioned to be the largest ammonia plant in the world by nameplate capacity, targeting approximately 1.4 million metric tons per year of production.

Designed to align with rising global demand for clean fuels and carbon-neutral industrial processes, this facility represents a critical step in the development of ammonia as a scalable, low-carbon energy carrier.

Blue Point Number One ATR - Project Details

Following the extensive studies between the key partners, Blue Point Number One ATR has finally reached Final Investment Decision (FID) and will progress for construction. The project is being developed by a joint venture formed by CF Industries (40%), JERA (35%), and Mitsui & Co. (25%).

Production is expected to begin in 2029, and each partner will manage product offtake independently, based on their ownership share. JERA, for instance, has confirmed plans to supply markets across Europe, Asia, and other regions.

The facility, located in Ascension Parish, Louisiana, will be the world’s largest ammonia production plant by nameplate capacity, producing approximately 1.4 million metric tons of blue ammonia annually. It will use natural gas as a feedstock and apply autothermal reforming (ATR) technology, along with integrated carbon capture and storage (CCS) systems designed to sequester up to 2.3 million metric tons of CO₂ each year.

Low-Carbon Ammonia Production Facility Construction

Construction of an ATR ammonia production facility at CF Industries’ Blue Point Complex, Louisiana, with CO2 dehydration and compression unit. Estimated cost: $4 billion.

Low-Carbon Ammonia Production Capacity

1.4 million metric tons annually, making it the largest ammonia production facility by nameplate capacity.

Start of Production

Expected to begin in 2029.

Operations

CF Industries will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the facility.

Ammonia Offtake

Off-take managed independently by the three partners according to ownership percentage.

Sequestration of CO2

1PointFive, a carbon capture, utilization, and sequestration (CCUS) company and subsidiary of Occidental will transport and sequester approximately 2.3 million metric tons of CO2 annually at its Pelican Sequestration Hub in Louisiana.

Technip Energies Contract and Scope of Works

Technip Energies was awarded a major EPC contract, valued at over €1 billion, to lead the engineering, procurement, equipment supply, and module fabrication for the Blue Point facility.

The company will apply its expertise in modularization and project delivery to ensure efficiency and scalability. The company has also been involved in many Carbon Capture projects, such as the Viking CCS project from Harbour Energy-BP JV in the UK, where it has taken the FEED Contractor role.

Technip Energies will integrate Topsoe’s SynCOR Ammonia™ technology—an autothermal reforming (ATR) process well-suited for low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia production.

This project strengthens Technip Energies’ role as a leader in industrial-scale decarbonization initiatives. According to CEO Arnaud Pieton:

“We are delighted to be entrusted by CF Industries, JERA, and Mitsui with BluePoint Number One ATR, a landmark project for the low-carbon ammonia industry that highlights our capabilities in delivering large-scale facilities that integrate state-of-the-art technologies. By leveraging our modularization know-how and project delivery excellence, we are paving the way for low-carbon ammonia production at scale. Technip Energies is part of the solution in a global effort towards a pragmatic, yet ambitious decarbonization.”
