SEA S Concourse Evolution - Project Details

Having served travellers for over fifty years, the existing S Concourse faces challenges in providing optimal service.

With significant increases in passenger volumes, aircraft operations, and evolving security regulations and passenger experiences, it is evident that an upgrade is essential to ensure efficient and enjoyable travel.

The project scope involves:

  •  modernizing building systems for greater operational efficiency and sustainability
  •  prioritizing seismic updates for earthquake resiliency,
  • Develop tailored design, amenities, and art to enhance passenger comfort and well-being.
  • Further, special attention will be given to Pacific Northwest placemaking, creating spaces resembling home warmth and familiarity, with more restaurants, shops, and lounges.

SEA S Concourse Evolution - AECOM's Role

AECOM’s responsibilities encompass project management, planning, and design, focusing on transforming the concourse into an inviting destination that accommodates the ongoing growth of modern travelers.

The design company will lead a diverse team of local and global consultants to ensure the success of the planned upgrades.

AECOM’s scope includes redeveloping the recently vacated Federal Inspection Services (FIS) and Customers and Border Protection (CBP) spaces into duty-free shopping, dining, and retail areas.

Furthermore, the concourse level will be reconfigured to facilitate more efficient circulation. The Penthouse level will be expanded to provide additional premium lounge space, and upgraded structural systems by adding new gate pods are also part of the scope of works.

SEA S Concourse Evolution - Sustainability Focus

AECOM will employ the Sustainability Design Approach (SDA) to analyze potential sustainable strategies across major resource categories, such as energy, carbon, site and landscape, water, waste, materials, health and wellness, transportation, habitat, resiliency, and the circular economy.

SEA S Concourse Evolution - Project Timelines

As a multi-year, multi-phase undertaking, the estimated completion of construction is set for 2031, with a projected cost of approximately $1.5 billion, according to Port of Seattle.

AECOM - Senior Leadership Statement

“We are thrilled to be key players in the S Concourse Evolution and support the Port’s vision to revitalize the 50-year-old facility into a modern gateway for international and domestic travelers,”

(Richard Whitehead, chief executive of AECOM’s global Buildings + Places business)
