Fluor Corporation has announced that the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has selected Hanford Tank Waste Operations & Closure, LLC (H2C) – a joint venture led by a subsidiary of BWX Technologies, Inc., in partnership with Fluor and Amentum – to execute the Hanford Integrated Tank Disposition Contract.
This new contract has an estimated ceiling of $45 billion over a 10-year ordering period for environmental management operations at the Hanford Site in Washington state.
Hanford Integrated Tank Disposition – Project Details
Hanford Site - About it
The Hanford Site, situated in southeastern Washington state, was a nuclear production complex operated by the U.S. federal government. Established as part of the Manhattan Project during World War II, its primary purpose was to produce plutonium for nuclear weapons, including the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki, Japan, in 1945.
Throughout the Cold War era, Hanford continued its role in nuclear weapons production, operating reactors for plutonium production and various facilities related to nuclear materials production.
Over time, Hanford became one of the most contaminated sites in the United States due to its production processes and waste disposal practices. The release of radioactive and chemical contaminants into the air, soil, and nearby Columbia River led to environmental and health concerns.
DOE strategic initatives
As part of the DOE’s strategic goals, one objective is to address the cleanup of toxic chemical and radioactive waste associated with the Nation’s Manhattan Project and Cold War legacy.
The DOE Office of Environmental Management (EM) aims to reduce environmental liabilities through accelerated cleanup of high-risk waste, thereby protecting human health and the environment (HHE).
The Integrated Tank Disposition Contract (ITDC) aims to provide optimal solutions for disposing of Hanford’s tank waste, achieving significant risk and financial liability reduction.

Fluor Leadership Comments
Tom D’Agostino, President of Fluor’s Mission Solutions business, highlighted Fluor’s longstanding presence in the Tri-Cities community and highlighted the critical role of the new contract in the mission to clean up Hanford.
He emphasized Fluor’s commitment to supporting the DOE and other site contractors in this effort and collaborating with the community to achieve progress in removing and processing tank waste.
