ACCIONA has finalized an agreement with Darby International Capital to acquire the concession for the Machupichu–Quencoro–Onocora–Tintaya transmission line project in southern Peru. This Public-Private Partnership Concession Contract includes the design, financing, construction, operation, and maintenance of a new high-voltage transmission line and associated substations, with an investment estimated at €250 million.

Machupichu–Quencoro–Onocora–Tintaya Transmission line - Project Details

The project involves the delivery of a 220kV transmission line stretching approximately 330 kilometers. The contract also covers the construction of two new substations—Quencoro Nueva and Onocora—and the expansion of three existing facilities at Suriray, Quencoro, and Tintaya Nueva.

Expected to be operational by 2028, the infrastructure will provide 300MVA of transmission capacity, creating a new electrical corridor that will meet the entire demand of Cusco city, which is currently only partially served by the existing grid.

In addition to improving service coverage, the development will enhance the reliability of southeastern Peru’s National Interconnected Electrical System (SEIN). It is anticipated to reduce current congestion and overload issues while enabling the future integration of renewable energy projects in the region.

Reinforcing ACCIONA’s Position in Peru

The acquisition marks another step in ACCIONA’s growing footprint in Peru’s transmission sector. The company is already developing eight other transmission projects under long-term concessions in the country. These include more than 1,200 kilometers of high-voltage lines, 14 new substations, and 17 upgrades to existing facilities.

Earlier in 2024, ACCIONA completed the acquisition of Darby International Capital’s high-voltage transmission line business in Peru. This move further consolidated its position as a leading transmission operator in Latin America. The transaction included engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC), as well as operation and maintenance (O&M) teams with experience managing over 4,200 kilometers of lines and 30 substations.

Expanding Transmission Capabilities Worldwide

ACCIONA’s portfolio includes more than 20 years of experience in designing, financing, and building electrical transmission systems across multiple geographies. The company has delivered projects ranging from low-voltage installations to complex high-voltage networks in countries such as Spain, Kenya, Mexico, and Peru.

ACCIONA’s recent projects reflect its growing presence in large-scale transmission infrastructure globally. In Australia, the company partnered with Genus in 2023 to deliver the eastern section of the HumeLink power transmission project in New South Wales. This design and construction contract  involves 237 kilometers of overhead lines and the upgrade of a 500kV substation, backed by a total investment of AU$1.4 billion (€850 million).

Also in Australia, ACCIONA and its consortium partners reached commercial and financial close with EnergyCo to deliver the transmission infrastructure for the Central West Orana Renewable Energy Zone (REZ). The development is expected to generate 5,000 construction jobs, underlining the social and economic impact of energy transition infrastructure.
