ANDRITZ AG, a global leader in sustainable industrial solutions and advanced clean air technologies, has been selected by Danish utility Kredsløb to deliver a large-scale carbon capture plant at the Lisbjerg Energy Park near Aarhus, Denmark.

Kredsløb, a municipally owned utility, provides district heating to over 330,000 residents and waste services to around 182,000 households in the Aarhus region. Committed to environmental stewardship, Kredsløb currently recycles or reuses approximately 63% of collected waste and is now advancing one of Denmark’s most ambitious BECCS (Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage) initiatives.

The planned facility will capture an estimated 435,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually from flue gases at the Lisbjerg plant. By targeting emissions from sustainable biomass combustion, the project will deliver durable carbon removals—contributing to Aarhus’ carbon-neutrality goals and reinforcing Denmark’s broader climate targets under its national strategy for decarbonisation.

Project Overview and Technology

The carbon capture facility will process flue gases from a district heating plant fueled by waste-to-energy and biomass combustion. It will utilize BASF’s OASE® blue technology, an advanced amine-based absorption system known for its high efficiency and proven track record in industrial carbon capture applications.

This technology will allow the plant to capture and permanently remove significant volumes of CO₂, which can be used by local industries to offset emissions that are otherwise difficult to reduce.

The plant’s integration within the existing energy infrastructure at Lisbjerg will enhance the regional renewable energy ecosystem by combining biomass energy generation with state-of-the-art carbon capture — making Aarhus a leading example of sustainable urban energy management.

Andritz's Contract Details

ANDRITZ has officially received the notice to proceed with the pre-engineering phase, a stage comparable to front-end engineering design (FEED). During this phase, the project concept will be further refined, and key technical and commercial parameters will be defined to support a final investment decision.

Full-scale execution of the project remains subject to Kredsløb reaching financial close and securing funding through the Danish Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) pool. A funding decision is anticipated in 2026. Should the project proceed, it is understood construction and commissioning would follow under an EPC Contract shortly thereafter, with commercial operations expected to begin soon after completion.

Leadership Comments

Bjarne Munk Jensen, CEO of Kredsløb, stated:

“This initiative holds immense potential for Aarhus and Denmark. With ANDRITZ’s extensive experience in plant engineering and the use of proven carbon capture technology, we are confident that we will successfully implement this milestone project and achieve our CO2 reduction targets. By capturing CO2 originating from the combustion of sustainable biomass, Kredsløb will generate permanent carbon removals, which can be used by companies to compensate for hard-to-abate emissions.”

Harald Reissner, Senior Vice President, ANDRITZ Clean Air Technologies division, added:

“ANDRITZ is committed to providing innovative, economically viable carbon capture solutions – in this project using the licensed OASE® blue technology from BASF – that support our customers in their green transition. We look forward to collaborating with Kredsløb on this important project and contributing to a cleaner future.”

Strategic Importance for Denmark’s Climate Goals

This project represents a flagship initiative within Denmark’s broader climate strategy. By capturing carbon emissions generated from sustainable biomass combustion, the facility will deliver permanent carbon removals — a vital mechanism in the race to reduce national greenhouse gas emissions and meet international climate commitments.

The carbon captured can be used by companies to compensate for emissions that are challenging to eliminate through conventional measures, such as certain industrial processes.
