The Athletics franchise has selected Mortenson | McCarthy as the construction manager for their new $1.5B ballpark in Las Vegas.
As the construction manager, the Mortenson-McCarthy joint venture (JV) will assume the role of overseeing all construction-related operations. This includes preconstruction tasks like estimating, scheduling, and logistics planning, as well as activities such as bidding, managing craft employees and trade partners, labor relations, and fostering community engagement.
The formal appointment is subject to approval from the Las Vegas Stadium Authority.
New Oakland Athletics Ballpark - Project Details
The New Las Vegas Stadium will be partially covered by a fixed roof and is set to be built on the grounds of the Tropicana Las Vegas in Paradise, Nevada.
The stadium will be the new home venue for the Oakland Athletics of Major League Baseball (MLB), marking their move from Oakland to the Las Vegas Valley.
Anticipated to debut in the 2028 MLB season, the stadium will have a capacity of circa 30,000 seats, with a construction cost estimated at $1.5 Billion USD.
Mortenson-McCarthy JV - Local experience and Details
Mortenson, headquartered in Minneapolis, is renowned for its expertise in sports and entertainment ventures. Some of its notable completed projects include:
- Truist Park (Atlanta Braves),
- Target Field (Minnesota Twins),
- Chase Center (Golden State Warriors)
- Climate Pledge Arena (Seattle Kraken) and
- U.S. Bank Stadium (Minnesota Vikings).
On the other hand, McCarthy stands as a major and accomplished contractor specializing in hospitality and entertainment projects across the United States.
With a substantial presence in Nevada spanning over four decades, McCarthy’s local builders have contributed to significant landmarks in the valley, including Circa Resort & Casino, Virgin Hotels, and the Palms Casino Resort.
Another Mortenson-McCarthy JV delivered the iconic Raiders’ Allegiant Stadium in July 2020, which is also located in Vegas, showcasing their expertise in the stadium construction niche.

Construction Manager Agreements are a commonly used contracting approach when the owner has limited experience delivering complex construction projects.
For example, the Tennessee Titans NFL Franchise has recently awarded a construction manager contract for a JV with Fluor for its new stadium (Titans has specifically chosen the Construction Manager at Risk contracting approach, where the JV must ensure a ceiling price for the construction).
This procurement methodology ensures the early involvement of experienced contractors from the project’s early days, which will bring all their expertise to support the further development of:

- Planning and coordination of third parties;
