GenusPlus Group Ltd has been awarded a major contract by Atmos Renewables to deliver the Balance of Plant (BoP) engineering and procurement for the Merredin Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and Substation in Western Australia. ‘
The project, valued at approximately $65 million, marks a significant milestone in the state’s energy transition and will become a flagship asset in Atmos Renewables’ growing clean energy portfolio.
Merredin Big Battery (MBB) - Project Details
Located approximately 230 km east of Perth and 7.5 km south-west of the town of Merredin, the 100 MW / 400 MWh Merredin Big Battery (MBB) will deliver four hours of dispatchable energy storage to help stabilise the Western Australian Electricity Market (WEM).
The project site lies just off the Bruce Rock–Merredin Road, 4 km south of the Great Eastern Highway, and directly adjacent to the Merredin Solar Farm—enabling co-location benefits that will strengthen renewable integration in the region.
The MBB is being jointly developed by Nomad Energy and Atmos Renewables, with development approval secured in April 2024. Grid connection will be provided by Western Power, linking the facility to the high-voltage network via the nearby Merredin Terminal Station.

Genus as the Balance of Plant Contractor
Atmos has awarded Genus a contract valued at approximately $65 million to deliver the balance of plant (BoP) works. Under this agreement, Genus will lead the detailed design, procurement, installation, and associated civil works for both the BESS and the substation. Construction will commence following financial close, with project delivery expected to span 18 months from notice to proceed. Completion is targeted for early 2027.
The project will engage around 70 personnel during peak construction and is expected to create 40–50 direct jobs during the build phase, with 3–5 ongoing roles during operations—providing meaningful economic benefits to the Wheatbelt region and reinforcing Genus’ growing role in Australia’s energy transition..
Industry Confidence and Regional Impact
Genus Managing Director David Riches emphasised the company’s growing presence in the battery storage sector and its longstanding relationship with Atmos Renewables.
“Genus is pleased to be increasing its presence in the Renewable Market through its involvement in this flagship project, which is aimed at providing significant benefits to Western Australians,” said Riches. “The award of this contract highlights the strength of our customer relationships and our reputation for reliable delivery.”
The Merredin BESS is part of a broader wave of large-scale energy storage deployments across Australia, as the grid adapts to higher shares of intermittent renewable generation and prepares for coal retirements.
