Saipem has been awarded a Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) contract by Algeria’s national oil company, Sonatrach, for its Phosphate Integrated Project. The award was made under a competitive dual-FEED process, where Saipem and another engineering firm will each develop full design proposals.
The project aims to establish a fully integrated phosphate-to-fertilizer value chain, encompassing mining infrastructure at Bled El Hadba, processing and ancillary units at Oued Keberit, port upgrades in Annaba, and a dedicated railway connection. Sonatrach will evaluate the competing FEED packages and select the most technically and economically viable solution before issuing the notice to proceed to the chosen EPC contractor.
Phosphate Integrated Project - Details
The Phosphate Integrated Project is a large-scale industrial development aimed at establishing Algeria’s first end-to-end phosphate and fertilizer production chain. Once completed, the facility will support the extraction of approximately 10 million tonnes of raw phosphate annually and produce up to 6 million tonnes of finished fertilizer products.
The development spans multiple sites and includes:
Mining operations at Bled El Hadba in the Tebessa region, where raw phosphate will be extracted.
Processing and fertilizer production units at Oued Keberit in Souk Ahras Province, designed to convert raw materials into market-ready products.
Port infrastructure upgrades at Annaba to support bulk export of fertilizers and related materials.
A new railway line, which will connect the mine and processing plant to the port, integrating logistics across the full value chain.
The integrated scope reflects a strategic move by Sonatrach to develop downstream capabilities and reduce reliance on raw material exports.
