STRABAG consortium wins €177 million D35 motorway contract in the Czech Republic

STRABAG announced that a consortium led by its Czech road construction subsidiary, STRABAG SIS a.s., has been awarded a contract worth about €177 million to build a new section of the D35 motorway between Úlibice and Hořice in the Czech Republic.

The award adds another major package to the Czech motorway expansion pipeline and advances a strategically important section of the D35 corridor. The project will replace part of the existing two-lane I/35 route with a new motorway section designed to improve regional mobility, freight efficiency, and road safety.

D35 Úlibice-Hořice – Project Background

According to STRABAG, the new section forms part of the Czech Republic’s wider Transport Infrastructure Development Plan. The D35 is one of the country’s key motorway corridors and forms part of the international E442 route.

The project is intended to replace the current I/35 section between Úlibice and Hořice, which STRABAG said is already heavily congested, particularly with heavy goods traffic. This places the contract in the category of strategic freight and passenger corridor upgrades rather than a routine regional road improvement.

Supporting information from the Czech national road authority, Ředitelství silnic a dálnic, positions the D35 as part of the planned northern backbone route linking Bohemia and Moravia. In market terms, the package sits comfortably alongside other major corridor upgrades covered by Construction Front, including the ViA15 road PPP in the Netherlands and Skanska’s A428 road works in the UK.

Scope of Works, Delivery Model and Project Implications

STRABAG said the contract covers construction of 16.3 kilometres of motorway, including 18 bridge structures, one junction, utility relocations, drainage systems, and about 2,782 metres of noise barriers. The bridges will have a combined length of 914 metres and will cross watercourses and railway lines along the route.

Construction began in April 2026, according to STRABAG. The company said the overall construction period is expected to run for about 46 months, with the road planned to open to traffic after 34 months.

From a delivery standpoint, this is a sizeable conventional road package with multiple interfaces rather than a simple earthworks job. The combination of bridge works, utilities, drainage, junction construction, and corridor protection measures gives it the profile of a full motorway civil package. STRABAG also said the project will use 3D machine control technology and LEAN methods to support construction and logistics efficiency.
