MW Storage AG, a Swiss investment fund specializing in financing, developing, and operating energy storage systems, has chosen Fluence Energy to implement one of continental Europe’s largest battery energy storage systems (BESS).
The asset is located near the German-Czech border in Arzberg, Wunsiedel district, and further strengthens the collaboration between Fluence and MW Storage, which has successfully executed previous projects in Finland and Switzerland.
MW Storage – Arzberg BESS - Asset Details
With a connection capacity of 100 megawatt and a storage capacity of 200 megawatt-hours, this facility stands as one of the largest under construction in Germany, a nation with significant potential for further development and expansion of its storage capabilities.
The project is a collaborative effort involving MW Storage, Reichmuth Infrastructure, a prominent Swiss asset management company specializing in mid-cap infrastructure investments, and energy companies Bayernwerk and Zukunftsenergie Nordostbayern GmbH (ZENOB).
MW Storage, acting as the project developer and participant through its fund, will oversee the construction of a lithium-ion battery storage power plant in Arzberg.

BESS Market in Germany – Positive Perspectives
According to Fluence, the German Federal Network Agency forecasts demand for large-scale battery storage of 23.7GW by 2037, which is equivalent to 237 projects of the scale being developed by MW Storage and Fluence.
Meeting the energy transition goals necessitates not only the expansion of renewable energy but also a substantial increase in storage capacities.
Given the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources, battery storage is crucial in balancing the grid.
A study by Frontier Economics projects that energy storage assets will generate €12 billion in macro-economic value by 2050, reduce CO2 emissions by up to 6.2 million tonnes in 2030, and lower electricity costs for end customers.
Reichmuth Infrastructure and MW Storage are positioning themselves for the future energy market by financing critical infrastructure for the energy transition by establishing the Arzberg facility.
