Halkirk II Wind – Project Details

Capital Power’s Halkirk II Wind project will have a capacity of 139.5 MW and is set to occupy around 17,000 acres of privately owned land in Alberta, Canada.

The project is situated about 5 kilometres to the north of the pre-existing Halkirk I Wind facility (150 MW), which is already under operation with 83 V-90 wind turbines also supplied by Vestas.

The new project was approved by the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) on July/23, and the construction is expected to begin in Q4 2023 (upon receiving of all approvals).

After completion, the Halkirk II Wind project will generate enough power to meet the demand of circa 63,000 homes in Alberta.

Halkirk II Wind – Vestas Scope

The new agreement includes:

  • The supply, delivery and installation of 31 V150-4.5 MW wind turbines
  •  10-year service agreement termed Active Output Management 5000 (AOM 5000).

Active Output Management is a service framework developed by Vestas to ensure wind turbine complexes generate the maximum energy output with the lowest costs. The Service Agreement includes a tailored operation and maintenance strategy for each asset.

Laura Beane, President of Vestas North America, expressed her enthusiasm for collaborating once more with Capital Power to expand their wind energy portfolios in Canada.

She highlighted the inclusion of industry-leading onshore wind turbines within this partnership. Beane also emphasized the compatibility of the 4 MW platform with Alberta’s wind conditions, and the company’s dedicated service operations to ensure the project operate at maximum efficiency.

Halkirk II Wind - Capital Power Leadership

Steve Owens, Senior Vice President of Construction and Engineering at Capital Power, echoed the excitement about partnering with Vestas once again, particularly for the supply of wind turbine technology for the Halkirk II Wind project.

Owens emphasized that the utilization of V150-4.5 MW wind turbines will play a pivotal role in materializing the Halkirk II Wind project, aligning with Capital Power’s commitment to drive a sustainable future for both people and the planet.

The project is regarded as a crucial component of their comprehensive approach toward achieving net zero by 2045.
