Wood has been chosen as the owner’s engineer for the Catalina Project, a groundbreaking green hydrogen production initiative in Teruel, Spain. The role includes technical leadership, development of preliminary studies and FEED, and support to EPC Contractor procurement.

The project, developed by a consortium led by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners through its Copenhagen Infrastructure Energy Transition Fund I K/S, is the first of its kind and will integrate 1.5GW of wind and solar energy to fuel a 500-MW electrolyser, generating green hydrogen.

Catalina Project – About it

The Catalina Project is a groundbreaking large-scale green hydrogen initiative aiming to establish 1.1 GW of combined onshore wind and solar photovoltaic plants and a pioneering 500 MW electrolyzer linked to a green ammonia plant through a dedicated 221 km hydrogen pipeline.

Anticipated to generate up to 84,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, equivalent to over 15% of Spain’s current hydrogen consumption, the project is expected to prevent more than 3.1 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions over its initial decade.

Catalina is poised to significantly benefit the local economy by utilizing 100% renewable energy for the establishment of a sustainable industry, fostering job creation and attracting young talent to the region. The cost-effective green hydrogen produced will meet the demands of local, regional, and national industries, particularly in the fertilizer sector.

Additionally, the hydrogen will be injected into the natural gas grid, contributing to a reduction in carbon emissions from natural gas consumption in Spain. The entire energy output will be utilized in Aragon, facilitating the development of a new high-value industry.

Catalina Project – Wood as the Owner’s Engineer

In its role as the owner’s engineer, Wood will serve as the primary technical authority for Catalina’s green hydrogen generation plant, which entails:

  • overseeing technology selection;
  • conducting preliminary studies;
  • providing support for front-end engineering and design (FEED); and
  • assistance in engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract tendering.

Giuseppe Zuccaro, President of Process & Chemicals Projects at Wood, expressed enthusiasm about being entrusted with a leading technical role in the Catalina Project. He highlighted the project’s complexity and pioneering nature, emphasizing that Catalina is establishing a global standard for large-scale green hydrogen production initiatives, contributing to Spain’s energy transition objectives.

Zuccaro underscored Wood’s commitment to leveraging its specialist hydrogen expertise and track record in delivering complex projects, coupled with its strong regional engineering presence. He added that Catalina will enhance Wood’s hydrogen portfolio, solidify its reputation as a preferred partner for hydrogen production, and contribute to industrial decarbonization projects.
