Thiess has secured a substantial mining contract worth US$330 million for the Kapuas Bara Utama (KBU) project, located in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. This six-year contract marks a significant achievement for the company, reaffirming its competitive standing after over 35 years of operations in the region.
The Scope of Works and Commitment to Local Communities and Sustainability
As part of the agreement, Thiess will be responsible for all mining activities, which include site establishment, technical services, overburden removal, and water management. Mobilisation for the project is expected to begin in early 2025.
Thiess is committed to supporting the local community through various initiatives. One of the key focus areas will be an empowerment program for village-owned enterprises. This initiative aims to offer fair and equal business opportunities for local entrepreneurs by involving them in the procurement of goods and services required for the project. Additionally, Thiess will provide opportunities for a diverse workforce to join their team.
As part of its sustainability efforts, Thiess will extend its Clean River Program in collaboration with the local community and the International River Foundation. This initiative aligns with Thiess’ long-standing commitment to environmental sustainability. Moreover, the company will work with the client to upgrade and maintain nearby public roads, further contributing to the region’s development.
