The SLB-Sener-ACCIONA Joint Venture has been awarded the Front End Engineering Design (FEED) contract for the Aurora Project — an important new initiative that will see the design of a carbon capture facility at AEB Amsterdam’s waste processing plant. This marks a significant milestone not only for AEB, but also for the city of Amsterdam’s wider efforts to lower its carbon footprint.

Following a European tendering process, the consortium will now move forward with the detailed design and planning of the facility, aiming to capture a substantial portion of the plant’s CO₂ emissions and help Amsterdam meet its climate goals.

Aurora Project - Details and FEED Fase

Aurora is the first carbon capture project led by ACCIONA, who will work alongside Sener and SLB Capturi. The project starts with the FEED phase — the crucial early design stage that sets the foundation for the future construction and operation of the plant. During this phase, the consortium will work closely with AEB and an external project management consultancy to finalise the design and execution strategy.

Whilst further details are yet to be provided by AEB, it is expected that a Final Investment Decision (FID) will be taken within the next 18 months. A notice to proceed for construction is anticipated shortly thereafter, depending on the outcomes of the FEED phase and permitting to engage the EPC Contractor.

The plant will use a proven amine-based solvent technology to capture CO₂ emissions from AEB’s waste-to-energy operations. Approximately 550,000 tonnes of fossil CO₂ are released every year by the facility. Once operational, the Aurora installation is expected to capture and permanently store around 500,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually by 2028, making a significant impact on the city’s emissions — reducing them by an estimated 10%.

The Joint Venture Partners for the Aurora Project FEED Works

Each partner brings unique strengths to the Aurora Project:

  • ACCIONA will lead project management, coordinating between partners and maintaining client relations.

  • Sener will provide its extensive engineering and technology expertise, supporting the detailed design of the installation.

  • SLB Capturi, a joint venture between SLB and Aker Carbon Capture, will be responsible for designing the CO₂ capture system, leveraging its track record of delivering modular, scalable carbon capture solutions across bioenergy, waste-to-energy, and cement sectors.

Together, the partners form a strong team with deep experience across project development, advanced engineering, and cutting-edge carbon capture technology.

About AEB Amsterdam

AEB Amsterdam has been at the heart of the city’s waste management system for more than a century. Originally a municipal operation, it became an independent company in 2014. Today, AEB operates one of the largest waste processing facilities in Western Europe, handling about 1.4 million tonnes of waste each year.

In addition to reducing landfill, AEB recovers valuable materials, generates electricity, and supplies district heating to homes across Amsterdam. By moving forward with the Aurora Project, AEB strengthens its role as a leader in sustainable waste management and supports the city’s commitment to a cleaner, more circular economy.
