GenusPlus Group Ltd has been awarded a contract by Alinta Energy to design, construct, and commission a major battery energy storage system (BESS) in Reeves Plains, South Australia.

The $105 million project includes the development of a 250 MW, four-hour battery system and associated infrastructure, connecting to the National Electricity Market through ElectraNet’s 275 kV transmission network.

The project forms part of Alinta Energy’s broader Reeves Plains Energy Hub and is expected to engage approximately 100 personnel during construction, with a strong focus on local procurement and workforce participation.

Reeves Plains - Energy Hub and BESS Project

The Reeves Plains Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) will be located approximately 50 minutes north of Adelaide and forms a core component of the broader Reeves Plains Energy Hub — a significant development aimed at enhancing South Australia’s energy security and grid stability.

The Energy Hub comprises two key elements: a utility-scale battery and a proposed gas-fired power station. The BESS, to be delivered in two stages, will provide four hours of electricity storage with an initial capacity of 250 MW. Once operational, it will have the ability to power approximately 300,000 households during peak demand periods by storing excess renewable energy and dispatching it when most needed.

Complementing the BESS, the gas-fired facility is designed to deliver up to 300 MW of fast-start, on-demand electricity, supporting system reliability during periods of volatility or shortfalls in renewable generation.

As Australia continues its transition toward a net-zero emissions future, the Reeves Plains Energy Hub offers a hybrid solution that combines storage and dispatchable generation to strengthen the resilience of the National Electricity Market (NEM).

The BESS will feature approximately 194 battery modules and 87 inverters, along with supporting infrastructure including a substation, water storage facilities, an office and control room, and vegetated site screening.

Genus' scope of work and contract details

It is understood that GenusPlus has been engaged to deliver the full EPC Contract for the Reeves Plains Battery Energy Storage System. The company will be responsible for the end-to-end delivery of all supporting infrastructure required to bring the 250 MW, four-hour BESS online and integrated with South Australia’s high-voltage transmission network.

Key elements of GenusPlus’ scope include:

  • Detailed engineering and design of the BESS and associated infrastructure

  • Procurement and supply of battery modules, inverters, and ancillary equipment

  • Civil works, including site preparation, access, drainage, and structural foundations

  • Mechanical and electrical installation across all systems

  • Construction of a new 275 kV switchyard and associated grid connection works

  • Integration with ElectraNet’s high-voltage network

  • Testing, commissioning, and performance validation

Approximately 100 personnel will be engaged during the construction phase, with GenusPlus committed to maximising local workforce participation and South Australian content throughout delivery.

Genus’ Managing Director David Riches said:

“This flagship project represents a significant step forward in our strategic growth within the renewable energy sector. It underscores the strength of our long-standing client relationships and our proven track record for safe, reliable delivery. We are proud to be at the front line of building the projects that keep this country moving, growing & connected; and we look forward to continuing this valued collaboration with Alinta Energy.”
