Balfour Beatty announced its inclusion among ten preferred bidders for the £10 billion Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) Transmission’s Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment (ASTI) framework project.
This project, referred to as Pathway to 2030, comprises an interlinked series of significant transmission line infrastructure undertakings in northern Scotland.
SSEN – Pathway to 2030 - About the Project
The Pathway to 2023 programme will facilitate the United Kingdom’s journey towards achieving a net-zero carbon footprint.
It entails the establishment of fresh high-voltage direct current (HVDC) links and enhancements to the transmission network. These improvements are intended to bolster the establishment of offshore wind connections.
SSEN - Pathway to 2030 - Preferred Bidders (On-shore works)
After a competitive procurement process, the subsequent companies have been designated as preferred bidders to deliver the onshore transmission infrastructure implementation within the program:
- Balfour Beatty
- Siemens Energy BAM
- J. Murphy & Sons
- Wood Power Solutions
- Omexom Morgan Sindall Infrastructure
- Burns & McDonnell
- Morrison Energy Services
- Linxon
- IQA
- NKT
Each of these entities will undertake specific tasks, capitalizing on their respective expertise, to collaboratively deliver the necessary underground cables and substations.
A crucial factor considered in the tender process was the promotion of local participation, and all of the chosen partners in the supply chain demonstrated strong performance in this regard.
The ultimate contract awards, with specific scope and pricing, will be announced in 2023.

SSEN - Pathway to 2030 - Another Significant Milestone
The preferred bidder announcement represents another significant project milestone towards achieving the renewable energy and climate change objectives set by the UK and Scottish Governments for 2030.
