Bechtel has been selected to support Perth Airport in delivering one of Australia’s largest airport expansion programs. This multi-billion-dollar initiative aims to increase terminal capacity, construct a new parallel runway, and introduce new amenities, including the airport’s first hotel and two multi-story car parks.
According to Perth Airport, the expansion is expected to drive substantial tourism and economic growth in Western Australia and beyond.
Bechtel as the Capital Portfolio Partner
As the appointed Capital Portfolio Partner, it is understood that Bechtel has been engaged in a contract akin to a Construction Manager, where it will manage multiple capital projects on behalf of Perth Airport.
According to Bechtel, the company will collaborate closely with Perth Airport to deliver major projects while ensuring minimal disruption to ongoing airport operations. The global engineering and construction firm will provide expert guidance on program management, establishing critical processes and tools to integrate projects and facilitate successful execution.
“Bechtel is proud to help shape the next chapter of aviation in Western Australia,” said Darren Mort, President of Bechtel’s Infrastructure business. “This significant expansion of Perth Airport will enhance passenger experience, create jobs, strengthen the economy, and benefit local communities.”

Key projects under the Program
A key element of the expansion is the consolidation of all flight services into a central precinct, which will accommodate Australia’s national carrier, Qantas. This redevelopment is designed to handle anticipated passenger growth from 16 million to 20 million annually by 2030.
Construction activities are already underway. The new runway is scheduled for completion in 2028, while the new terminal is expected to be operational by 2031 (more info on the video below).
Bechtel - Significant Experience in Brownfield Airport Environment
Bechtel brings extensive experience in large-scale airport development, having successfully delivered more than 100 new and expanded airports worldwide. Notable projects include Western Sydney International Airport, Hamad International Airport, and Hong Kong International Airport.
This partnership underscores Perth Airport’s commitment to modernizing infrastructure and accommodating future growth, reinforcing its position as a key gateway to Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.
Economic Impact and Future Development
Jason Waters, CEO of Perth Airport, emphasized the project’s significance for the region. “Perth Airport is a barometer for growth in the Western Australian economy,” Waters said. “When we’re growing, the State’s economy is growing and prospering. The appointment of Bechtel as our Capital Portfolio Partner is another critical step in delivering our plans to change the face of Perth Airport over the coming decade.”
The expansion aligns with Perth Airport’s strategic vision to enhance connectivity, improve passenger facilities, and support Western Australia’s long-term economic development. With direct flights to Europe, Perth Airport plays a vital role in connecting Australia to international markets.
