Vår Energi  has reached the final investment decision (FID) for the Balder Phase VI project, a subsea development in the North Sea that will tie back to the Jotun FPSO. Announced on 18 June 2025, the project extends production from existing infrastructure on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS). Vår Energi operates the project with a 90% interest, alongside partner Kistos Energy Norway AS (10%).

Balder Phase VI is a fast-track development aimed at sustaining output from the Balder area by connecting new wells to the existing subsea network. Leveraging the upgraded Jotun FPSO, the project is expected to reduce delivery time and capital cost while supporting Vår Energi’s production target of 350,000–400,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd) through 2030.

Balder Phase VI – Project Background and Details

The Balder Phase VI project is the latest addition to Vår Energi’s multi-phase development strategy in the Balder area, one of its four core production hubs on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS). The Balder field, located approximately 200 kilometres west of Stavanger, was Norway’s first offshore oil discovery and has undergone continuous redevelopment since first production.

The current development aims to extract additional resources through existing infrastructure, specifically the Jotun FPSO, which has recently been reinstalled following an extensive refurbishment. Balder Phase VI consists of:

  • a new subsea template,
  • a multilateral production well, and
  • a connecting flowline tied back to the Jotun FPSO.

The use of existing infrastructure substantially shortens the time to first oil and enables a breakeven price below USD 35 per barrel. Details regarding the contractors involved in the Balder Phase VI execution and the specific contracting methodology (e.g. EPC contracting) have not been disclosed.

With estimated 2P reserves of 15 mmboe and an internal rate of return (IRR) above 35%, the project is expected to pay back within one year from start of production under current market conditions. The final investment decision to proceed with the project aligns with Vår Energi’s strategy of unlocking additional volumes through incremental, capital-efficient developments in established hub areas.

Integration with Jotun FPSO and Field Optimisation

The Balder area has recently undergone significant infrastructure upgrades, particularly the reinstallation of the Jotun FPSO, which now serves as the central host facility. As part of this hub strategy, Balder Phase VI and other ongoing developments are being tied into the FPSO to optimise throughput and extend its operational life.

The upgraded Jotun FPSO forms the backbone of Vår Energi’s efforts to consolidate production from the Balder and Ringhorne fields. The vessel’s improved processing capacity will also support debottlenecking activities aimed at increasing its nameplate production capacity, enabling the transfer of selected wells from the aging Balder Floating Production Unit (FPU), which is planned for decommissioning in 2028.

Balder Area Outlook and Strategic Relevance

Balder Phase VI is among eight projects Vår Energi plans to sanction in 2025, supporting its goal to sustain production above 400,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (kboepd) by the end of this year. The company’s portfolio includes around 30 early-phase projects, highlighting its focus on organic growth within core hubs.

In the Balder area, the Balder Next project targets roughly 55 million barrels of contingent resources and involves decommissioning the Balder Floating Production Unit (FPU) by 2028. Production from selected wells will transfer to the upgraded Jotun FPSO, with planned debottlenecking to increase capacity and accelerate output. This transition is expected to lower operating costs by about USD 130 million annually and reduce CO₂ emissions by 80,000 tonnes per year.

COO Torger Rød said:

“The Balder area in the North Sea is one of Vår Energi’s core hubs and constitutes significant future resource potential. With the Jotun FPSO now installed as the new area host, we will continue to unlock additional high value barrels from the Balder area through several phases of new developments and field optimisations. This includes Balder phase V, which will come on stream later this year. And with the FID for Balder Phase VI we are taking yet another important step to sustain production from the area through short time to market developments.”
