Northside Interceptor Tunnel Project (NSIT) - Project Details

The NSIT project incorporates various essential components to ensure its effectiveness and success. This includes the construction of a 6,660 linear feet precast-concrete-segmental-lined rock tunnel with a finished inside diameter of 16.5 feet.

The design was developed considering both dry and wet-weather sewage flow while also providing the capacity to store combined sewage.

The NSIT project holds significant importance as it aligns with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s mandated Consent Decree. It is set to revolutionize the city’s sewer infrastructure, leading to a substantial reduction in combined sewer overflows (CSOs).

At the heart of the project lies a main structure: a 16.5-foot internal diameter tunnel situated along the Cuyahoga River. This tunnel will play a crucial role by collecting overflows from four different locations and retaining them.

With a storage capacity exceeding 10 million gallons, this strategic approach will effectively mitigate the environmental consequences of CSOs, thereby protecting the local waterways’ health.

Funding for the project will be sourced from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency’s Water Pollution Control Loan Fund (WPCLF) and is expected to be included in Granite’s third-quarter Capital Allocation Plan (CAP).

Northside Interceptor Tunnel Project (NSIT) - Tendering Process and Granite as the successful bidder

The design phase for the Northside Interceptor Tunnel was finalized in the Spring of 2023.
Following this, the City of Akron initiated a pre-qualification process, shortlisting four contractors to submit their proposals.

A meticulous evaluation of each proposal was conducted, leading to the selection of Granite Construction Company’s proposal as the most cost-effective and responsible option. According to the City of Akron, Granite Construction Company’s proposal came in $17 million below the estimated construction cost.

As for the project timeline, the commencement is scheduled for September 2023, with the anticipated completion date set for July 2027.
